Mgahinga in March is wet, with cool temperatures and frequent rain showers. The trails often become muddy and slippery, which can make hiking quite challenging.
During this month, there are fewer visitors in the park, allowing for quiet and more personal experiences with nature. Because it is a low season, safari and accommodation prices are often reduced, making March a good time for a budget safari.
Weather and scenery
The vegetation during March is lush and green, creating great opportunities for photography and filming. Rain can fall at any time of the day, so it is best to plan hikes in the morning when the weather is usually clearer. Visitors should pack waterproof hiking boots and be in good physical shape since trekking can be demanding.
Gorilla and golden monkey trekking
Gorilla trekking is possible in March, and the gorillas are often found at lower elevations where food is abundant. Golden monkeys, known for their bright golden fur, can also be seen in the bamboo forests.
Bird watching
March is a rewarding month for bird watchers. Many bird species are breeding, and food is abundant in the park. Because there are fewer visitors, birding tours are quieter and more detailed. Guides can share more insights, and carrying a bird field guide makes the experience even better.
Other activities
Visitors can also enjoy nature walks and the Batwa Trail experience. This activity gives travelers a chance to learn about the Batwa people’s culture, traditional lifestyle, and the history of Mgahinga National Park.
What to pack
Pack a raincoat, long trousers, long-sleeved shirts, warm clothing for cold mornings and nights, trekking poles for stability, insect repellent, and a small first aid kit. Travelers who enjoy solitude will find March perfect for peaceful exploration. Make sure to book your gorilla and golden monkey trekking permits early, as well as your accommodation, to ensure a smooth visit.
Getting to Mgahinga

Mgahinga in March has unpredictable weather, but with proper preparation, visitors can fully enjoy the park’s wildlife, activities, and peaceful atmosphere.
