Mgahinga National Park Rules & Regulations for Visitors

Mgahinga National Park Rules & Regulations for Visitors

To ensure the safety of visitors and the protection of wildlife, Mgahinga National Park is managed by a set of rules and regulations enforced by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. No matter what activity you are doing in the park, it is important to follow these rules.

  • No littering in the park: Visitors must not throw any rubbish inside the park. Always carry your waste and dispose of it in designated areas. This helps protect animals from swallowing or getting injured by harmful materials.
  • No smoking: Smoking is strictly prohibited inside the park because it increases the risk of forest fires.
  • Stay on the designated trails: Always walk on the guided paths. Straying from the trail can damage vegetation or cause you to get lost inside the park.
  • Do not pick anything from the park: It is illegal to collect plants, flowers, or insects from the park. Respect everything in its natural environment and only take photographs as memories.
  • Keep silent: Maintain low voices at all times. Loud noise can disturb wildlife and spoil the experience for other visitors.
  • Follow the tour guide’s instructions: Your tour guide is trained to keep you safe and informed. Always follow their directions because they understand animal behavior and know the safest routes within the park.
  • Do not enter the park when sick: Mountain gorillas are highly vulnerable to human diseases. If you are sick, be honest and postpone your trek to avoid passing illnesses to the gorillas.
  • Maintain a safe distance: Always keep at least seven meters away from the gorillas and other animals. This helps protect both you and the wildlife from possible disease transmission.
  • No eating near primates: Eating in the presence of primates is not allowed. Food can attract them and cause unwanted behavior or health problems.
  • Stay with your group: Remain close to your trekking group as assigned by your guide. This ensures your safety and allows everyone to enjoy the experience together.
  • Respect the one-hour limit: You are allowed only one hour with the gorillas. Please respect this rule even if the encounter is very exciting.

Following these Mgahinga National Park rules helps promote safety, protect wildlife, and support sustainable tourism for future generations.
