Mgahinga National Park is the smallest national park in Uganda, covering about 33.7 square kilometers in the southwestern part of the country. Despite its small size, the park is a true treasure for adventure seekers, wildlife enthusiasts, and nature lovers.
Even though it is small, Mgahinga offers many exciting activities that make it one of Uganda’s most memorable destinations.
Gorilla Trekking
Gorilla trekking is the main activity in Mgahinga National Park. It involves hiking through the tropical rainforest in search of the mountain gorillas that live in the park. Mgahinga is home to only one gorilla family known as the Nyakagezi Gorilla Family.
The trek begins at the park headquarters with a short briefing about the rules and safety guidelines. Trekkers then start their journey into the forest, which can take 30 minutes to 6 hours depending on where the gorillas are located.
Once the gorillas are found, visitors are allowed to spend one hour observing them, taking photos, and learning about their behavior as they feed and interact in their natural environment.
Golden Monkey Trekking
The second most popular activity in the park is golden monkey trekking. This activity is done in a similar way to gorilla trekking, starting with a briefing at the park headquarters before heading into the forest.
The trek usually lasts 30 minutes to 4 hours, depending on the location of the monkeys. When the group is found, visitors spend one hour watching them play, feed, and move gracefully among the bamboo trees. Their golden-orange fur makes them one of the most beautiful primates to see in Uganda.
Batwa Cultural Experience
For visitors interested in cultural encounters, the Batwa Cultural Experience is one of the most rewarding activities in Mgahinga. The Batwa were the original inhabitants of the forest before it became a national park.
During this experience, visitors are guided by Batwa elders who demonstrate how they lived, hunted, and used plants for food and medicine. You will also enjoy traditional songs and dances that tell stories of their connection with the forest. This experience gives travelers a deep understanding of the Batwa’s lifestyle and history.
Bird Watching
Bird watching is another great activity in Mgahinga National Park. The park is home to over 250 bird species, making it an excellent destination for bird lovers. The best birding areas include the bamboo forest, the montane forest, and the gorge between Mount Gahinga and Mount Sabyinyo.
Birding safaris are guided by experienced rangers who ensure your safety and help you identify different species. Some of the birds you may spot include the Rwenzori turaco, regal sunbird, Rwenzori batis, blue-headed sunbird, and red-faced woodland warbler.
Mgahinga National Park may be small, but it offers some of the most memorable experiences in Uganda. From gorilla trekking and golden monkey tracking to bird watching and Batwa cultural tours, every visitor can find something special to enjoy in the heart of this mountain park.
