Mount Sabyinyo is one of the volcanic ranges in the Virunga Massif, which stretches across Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Hiking Mount Sabyinyo is done from the Ugandan side, within Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, and it offers an adventurous climb through thick forests and scenic highlands.

Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Travel to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
Your journey to Uganda’s beautiful highlands begins upon arrival at Entebbe International Airport. After a short briefing from your driver guide, you will start your long but scenic drive to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, located in the far southwestern part of Uganda.
You will pass through local towns, markets, and villages, enjoying views of Uganda’s countryside and learning about local cultures along the way. Stop for an en route lunch before continuing the drive, which takes about 8 to 9 hours. Arrive at your lodge in the evening, check in, have dinner, and rest for the night.
Day 2: Hike Mount Sabyinyo
Wake up early for breakfast and drive to the park offices with your packed lunch. Meet the park rangers who will brief you about the hike and check your climbing gear before you begin the adventure.
The hike up Mount Sabyinyo takes you through bamboo forests, dense vegetation, and wooden ladders built on steep slopes to make the trail easier. Along the way, you may spot monkeys, birds, and other small wildlife. The climb takes about five hours to reach the top.
At the summit, you will stand at the meeting point of three countries: Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Take pictures, enjoy your packed lunch, and relax while taking in the fresh mountain air. Begin your descent, which takes about 5 to 6 hours, and meet your driver guide at the base. Drive back to your lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 3: Departure to Entebbe or Kigali
After breakfast, check out of your lodge and begin your drive back to Entebbe International Airport or Kampala. Stop for lunch along the way and enjoy the views of rural Uganda as you pass through different landscapes and small towns.
You can also choose the shorter route by driving to Kigali, Rwanda, where you can catch your flight from Kigali International Airport. This marks the end of your 3 days Mount Sabyinyo climbing tour.
