This 4 days Mgahinga and Bwindi gorilla trekking safari takes you deep into Uganda’s gorilla highlands for two unforgettable encounters with the endangered mountain gorillas. The journey begins in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, the smallest park in Uganda, known for its scenic views of the Virunga Volcanoes.
You will then continue to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, home to almost half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. Along the way, enjoy the beautiful landscapes of southwestern Uganda and interact with the Batwa community to learn about their culture and traditions.
Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Kampala or Entebbe to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
Meet your driver guide at the agreed point for a short briefing about the safari. Begin your journey to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, a small but rich protected area that hosts two gorilla families. The drive offers scenic views of hills, farmlands, and the distant Virunga Mountains.
Make a stop at the Uganda Equator for photo moments, souvenir shopping, and a short experiment demonstrating the movement of water across hemispheres. Continue your journey and arrive at your lodge in the evening. Check in, have dinner, and rest.
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Mgahinga & Transfer to Bwindi National Park
After breakfast, head to the park offices for a gorilla trekking briefing. The session includes checking permits, assigning ranger guides, and learning about trekking rules such as keeping a safe distance, avoiding noise, and not littering the park.
Begin your trek into the forest with the help of your guide and rangers. Along the way, you may spot birds, butterflies, and other small forest animals. Once you locate the gorillas, spend one hour observing and photographing them as they go about their daily routines. The full trek can take between three to five hours, depending on the gorillas’ location.
After the trek, have lunch and transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, home to the largest number of mountain gorillas in the world. Arrive in the evening, check in at your lodge, have dinner, and relax.
Day 3: Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi & Batwa Community Visit
After breakfast, carry your packed snacks and head to the park headquarters for a briefing before starting your second gorilla trekking adventure. You will be guided by park rangers, escorts, and porters through the forest trails in search of a gorilla family.
Once you find them, spend an hour observing their behavior. Watch as they feed, play, and groom each other under the protection of the dominant silverback. After the trek, have lunch and later visit the Batwa community. Here, you will learn how the Batwa live outside the forest, enjoy traditional songs and dances, and see their handmade crafts. Return to your lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 4: Return to Kampala or Entebbe
After breakfast, check out of your lodge and start your journey back to Kampala or Entebbe. Stop at the equator for lunch and last-minute photos before continuing to the city. Your driver will drop you off at Entebbe International Airport or your preferred location, marking the end of your 4 days Mgahinga gorillas and Bwindi gorilla trekking safari.
