Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is rich in wildlife, with more than 39 mammal species and 115 bird species. The park was established mainly to protect endangered animals and serves as a key part of Uganda’s conservation efforts.
Mountain Gorillas
Mountain gorillas are the main attraction in Mgahinga. The park is part of the Virunga Conservation Area, which was created to protect these rare primates. As their name suggests, mountain gorillas live in the high mountains, where their thick fur keeps them warm in the cool temperatures.
Their DNA is about 98% similar to that of humans, making them a fascinating and unique species. Visitors can get gorilla trekking permits from the Uganda Wildlife Authority and spend an hour observing their behavior in their natural habitat. The Nyakagezi Gorilla Family is the main group available for trekking in Mgahinga.
Golden Monkeys
Golden monkeys are another highlight for visitors to Mgahinga National Park. These endangered primates live in the Virunga Mountains and are known for their beautiful golden-orange fur on their cheeks, backs, and tails. The park is home to about 3,000 to 4,500 golden monkeys, usually seen in groups of around 30 led by a dominant male.
Unlike gorillas, golden monkeys are more difficult to track because they leave no traces of their movement. However, park rangers guide tourists during golden monkey trekking, which also requires a permit.
African Forest Elephants
African forest elephants live in the humid forest areas of Mgahinga. They feed on leaves, tree bark, and forest fruits. Visitors may see them during nature walks, especially along the Sabinyo Gorge Trail.
Other Animals in Mgahinga
Besides gorillas and golden monkeys, the park is home to several other animals such as leopards, side-striped jackals, forest buffaloes, black-fronted duikers, bushpigs, bushbucks, African golden cats, and giant forest hogs. These animals are rarely seen but are part of the park’s rich ecosystem.
Bird-life in Mgahinga
Mgahinga is also a great destination for birdwatchers, with more than 115 bird species recorded. Some of the notable birds include the Rwenzori turaco, cinnamon-chested bee-eater, strange weaver, Kivu ground thrush, southern collared sunbird, and red-faced woodland warbler. Many of these birds are endemic to the Albertine Rift. The best time for birding is during the wet seasons, from March to May and September to November, when birds are most active.
