Planning on hiking Mount Muhabura Volcano? Mount Muhabura is one of the eight Virunga volcanoes shared between Uganda and Rwanda. It is the third-highest among the Virunga ranges, standing at an elevation of 4,127 meters. It is a dormant volcano.
The name “Muhabura” means “the guide” in the local language. It was named so because travelers in the past used the mountain as a landmark to find their way.
Mount Muhabura can be hiked from both countries. On the Ugandan side, it is accessed through Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, while on the Rwandan side, it is accessed through Volcanoes National Park.
Although it is one of the most popular mountains to hike in the Virunga ranges, good physical fitness is still required.
The hike to Mount Muhabura is usually a one-day activity that starts from the base and continues up to the crater lake at the top. As hikers move higher, they can spot wildlife such as forest elephants, birds, and different vegetation zones.
Tourists are always accompanied by a guide who ensures their safety and explains important details during the hike. Those hiking from Uganda receive a briefing at the Ntebeko Visitor Centre before starting, while those hiking from Rwanda are briefed at the Kinigi Visitor Centre.
The hike starts at around 7 a.m. and takes about 5 to 7 hours. It offers a full day of adventure in the natural environment. Porters are available for hire at a small fee to help carry extra luggage, allowing hikers to save energy for the climb.
A hiking permit for Mount Muhabura costs USD 75 per person per day. Tourists are advised to pack properly for the hike to stay safe and comfortable in the wild. Essential items include long trousers, a long-sleeved shirt, a rain jacket, waterproof hiking boots, and insect repellent.
The best time to hike Mount Muhabura is during the dry seasons, from June to September and from December to February, when the trails are drier and easier to walk on.
