The name “Gahinga” means “pile of stones” in the local Kinyarwanda language. It is a dormant volcano and the smallest of the Virunga ranges, standing at about 3,474 meters above sea level.
The name of Mgahinga Gorilla National Park was derived from this mountain.
Mount Gahinga is covered mainly by two vegetation types — Afro-montane and bamboo forests. These forests are home to endangered mountain gorillas and other wildlife species.
The Gahinga hike is considered less challenging compared to other Virunga volcanoes, although good physical fitness is still required. The climb to the summit offers a chance to see mountain gorillas, golden monkeys, and volcanic caves.
The hike takes about 6 to 8 hours and begins with a briefing at the park headquarters. After the briefing, guides lead hikers on an exciting journey up the mountain.
Hiking permits can be purchased on the same day of the hike; no advance booking is required. Porters are available at the park headquarters to help carry luggage for a small fee.
The cost of hiking Mount Gahinga is USD 80 for foreign non-residents, USD 70 for foreign residents, and UGX 50,000 for East African citizens.
Hiking is possible throughout the year, but the best time is during the dry seasons, from June to September and from December to February. During this time, there is little rainfall, the vegetation is shorter, and the trails are drier, making the hike easier and more enjoyable.
Packing properly is important for a successful hike. Essential items include hiking shoes, garden gloves, a long-sleeved shirt, long trousers, insect repellent, a rain jacket, a first aid kit, a camera, sunglasses, and a hat.
