Located in the southwestern region of Uganda, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is the smallest national park in the country, covering an area of 33.9 square kilometers. Established in 1991, the park is best known for gorilla trekking, which can take up to six hours depending on the location of the gorillas. This remains the main activity for most visitors to the park.
Accessing Mgahinga National Park
The park can be accessed by road from Kampala, covering about 509 kilometers via the Kampala–Masaka-Mbarara route, which takes around nine hours. Mgahinga has two main entry gates: Ntebeko and Bunyonyi, both of which provide access to the park’s attractions. Travelers are advised to use a 4×4 safari vehicle, especially from Kisoro to the park, as the roads can be rough and dusty.
Ntebeko Gate
Ntebeko Gate is the main entrance to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. It is located in the southwestern part of the park near the headquarters, where visitors begin their adventures. At this gate, tourists can obtain permits, meet park rangers, and arrange various activities such as gorilla trekking, bird watching, hiking, and nature walks.
Ntebeko Gate also has small shops where visitors can buy souvenirs, picnic areas for relaxation, and toilets for public use. This gate serves as the main information center, providing visitors with details about the park, its wildlife, and the available activities.
Bunyonyi Gate
Bunyonyi Gate is the second entrance to Mgahinga National Park and is found on the northern side of the park. It provides scenic walking trails through the forest and beautiful views of the surrounding landscape. This gate is ideal for activities such as nature walks and bird watching, as many birds can be seen and heard chirping in the trees.
Best time to visit Mgahinga
The best time to visit Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is during the dry seasons, from June to August and from December to January. During these months, the trails are dry and easier to walk on, making outdoor activities like gorilla trekking, birding, and hiking more enjoyable.
