Are gorilla trekking permits refundable? Gorilla trekking permits are official documents that allow tourists to visit and track a specific gorilla family in a designated location.
Gorilla trekking is an activity where visitors walk through the forest to find mountain gorillas. Only a group of eight people is allowed to visit one gorilla family for one hour each day.
Because gorilla permits are in very high demand, it is recommended to book at least 3 to 6 months in advance to secure your spot.
Permits can be purchased directly from the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) or through a trusted tour operator. Only people aged 15 years and above are allowed to take part in gorilla trekking.
It is possible to cancel a gorilla permit if unexpected situations occur. Refunds may be given depending on how early the cancellation is made:
- If cancellation is made 9 to 45 days before the trekking date, you will receive a 25% refund, and UWA keeps 75%.
- If cancellation is made 46 to 90 days before the trekking date, you will receive a 50% refund, and UWA keeps 50%.
- If cancellation is made 91 days or more before the trekking date, you will receive a 75% refund, and UWA keeps 25%.
Please note that no refund is given if the cancellation is made 0 to 8 days before the trekking date.
Refunds are only made to tourists who have fully paid for their permits. Those who make partial payments are not eligible for refunds.
The cost of a gorilla permit in Uganda is USD 800 for foreign non-residents, USD 700 for foreign residents, and UGX 300,000 for East African citizens.
The best time to go gorilla trekking is during the dry seasons, from June to August and December to February, when the trails are easier to walk. However, the rainy seasons can also be good for travelers who prefer a more challenging experience.
Make sure you book your gorilla permit only when you are certain about your travel plans and fitness level to avoid cancellations.
