Cyanika border is one of the main crossing points between Uganda and Rwanda. On the Ugandan side, it is found in Kisoro District, with Kisoro town as the nearest center. On the Rwandan side, it lies in Burera District. The border operates from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. in Uganda and from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. in Rwanda.
To cross the Cyanika border, you must have a valid passport with at least six months before expiry and a visa. You can apply for the East African Tourist Visa, which allows travel between Uganda, Kenya, and Rwanda. It costs 100 USD and is issued by immigration officers either online or in person.
A valid yellow fever vaccination card or certificate is also required before you are allowed to cross. The crossing process usually takes 30 minutes to 1 hour. You will need an exit stamp from the country you are leaving and an entry stamp from the immigration office of the country you are entering. Customs officers will also inspect your luggage.
It is best to cross the border early in the morning or during the afternoon when it is less busy to save time. Carry U.S. dollars in cash instead of relying on bank cards, and make sure you have proof of accommodation and your travel itinerary.
Through the Cyanika border, travelers from Rwanda can easily visit Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and Bwindi Impenetrable National Park for gorilla trekking. A gorilla permit in Uganda costs 700 USD, making it more affordable. The route from Kigali to Cyanika is shorter and cheaper than traveling from Kampala. It takes about 3 hours to reach the parks from Kigali through Cyanika, while the journey from Kampala takes around 8 hours.
Besides gorilla trekking, visitors can also enjoy other activities such as golden monkey tracking, Batwa cultural experiences, and visits to Lake Bunyonyi and Lake Mutanda.
For transport, you can hire a private car, take a taxi, or travel with a registered tour company.
