Mgahinga in April - Weather, Gorilla Trekking & Travel Tips

Mgahinga in April falls within the long wet season, which runs from March to May. Daytime temperatures range between 17°C and 20°C, while night temperatures can drop to around 9°C, creating a cool and refreshing atmosphere.

During this month, the vegetation becomes lush and green, offering a beautiful backdrop for photography and filming. However, the frequent rain showers make the trails muddy and slippery, which can be challenging for hikers and those trekking gorillas or golden monkeys. A 4×4 vehicle is recommended for easier access to the park.

Wildlife and trekking

Although some animals tend to hide during the rains, wildlife can still be seen in various parts of the park. Gorilla trekking remains one of the most popular activities in April. The gorillas are usually found at lower altitudes where food is plentiful, making them easier to locate. The trek can be demanding because of the wet terrain, so visitors should prepare physically and mentally. Once you find the gorillas, you are allowed to spend up to one hour with them, observing their behavior and taking photos.

Other activities in April

Golden monkey trekking is another activity that can be done in April, though spotting them can be more challenging because they move quickly and leave few signs behind. The Batwa trail experience is also a good option during this month, offering an indoor cultural experience where visitors can learn about the Batwa people, their traditions, and forest life.

For adventurous travelers, hiking the volcanoes: Mount Gahinga, Mount Muhabura, and Mount Sabyinyo, is possible, but it requires determination and stability due to the wet and slippery conditions. Bird watching is also rewarding in April, as the park is home to many species such as the speckled mousebird, handsome francolin, moorland chat, and olive pigeon.

Fewer crowds and lower prices

April is part of the low season, which means fewer tourists and lower prices on permits and accommodation. Budget travelers can take advantage of this time to visit the park at a reduced cost. However, it is still important to book permits and accommodation in advance through the Uganda Wildlife Authority or the park offices.

What to pack

Packing correctly is essential for a smooth trip. Bring warm clothing, raincoats, waterproof hiking boots, insect repellent, and a camera. Proper gear will help you stay comfortable and safe in the changing weather conditions.

In April, Mgahinga offers a peaceful experience with green landscapes, fewer visitors, and rewarding wildlife encounters. Although the rains can make trekking more challenging, being flexible and well-prepared ensures an enjoyable and memorable visit to the park.
