May is a beautiful month to visit Mgahinga National Park, as the rains bring life to the park’s landscape. This month falls within the long rainy season, making the park green and full of energy.
Weather in May
During the day, temperatures average around 25°C and drop to about 20°C at night. The weather is generally warm and cool, but the rains make some trails muddy and slippery. Hiking without support, such as trekking poles, can be challenging.
Activities to enjoy
Even with the rain, there are plenty of activities to enjoy in May. Visitors can go for nature walks, take part in the Batwa Trail experience, and spend time connecting with nature.
Golden monkey trekking is another exciting activity that requires a permit. You can book this permit in advance from the Uganda Wildlife Authority.
Gorilla trekking and wildlife
During May, gorillas are often found at lower elevations where food is abundant. The lush green vegetation provides perfect scenery for photography.
Bird-watching is also at its best this month. Both migratory and resident bird species can be spotted, filling the park with colorful sights and sweet melodies.
Low tourist numbers
Mgahinga in May receives fewer tourists compared to the peak season. This allows for quieter and more intimate wildlife encounters. However, even with fewer visitors, it is important to book your permits and accommodation early.
Accommodation options
Accommodation in May ranges from luxury lodges to budget-friendly stays, with some offering discounts during this period. Popular options include Mount Gahinga Lodge, Rushaga Gorilla Lodge, and Muca Eco Village. Whether you prefer a simple or luxurious stay, you will find comfort while on your safari.
Packing essentials
Packing correctly is very important for this season. Bring waterproof hiking boots, a raincoat, long-sleeved shirts and trousers, gloves, head socks, insect repellent, and a first aid kit.
