Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is one of Uganda’s most iconic natural attractions, offering a great opportunity to capture rare wildlife species and scenic mountain landscapes. The park is home to endangered mountain gorillas, golden monkeys, and unique vegetation zones, making it a perfect location for both filming and photography.
For filmmakers, the process is slightly more complex and costly because several permits and clearances are required. All commercial filming in the park is managed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA). Filming companies must obtain gorilla trekking permits for every crew member before entering the park.
Foreign filming companies must also get accreditation from the Uganda Media Council. Each crew member must apply for a media card, which costs about USD 175 for up to 30 days and USD 225 for up to 60 days. Applicants are required to submit forms, passports, and proof of payment. After these steps, filming equipment will be cleared by customs at the entry point.
During filming, each crew is limited to a maximum of five members and must be led by a park guide. Mixing with other tourists is not allowed.
The following rules must be followed during filming:
- Do not use flash equipment.
- The minimum age for filming gorillas is 15 years.
- No one with a contagious disease is allowed to visit gorillas.
- Do not touch wildlife.
- Maintain silence while in the forest.
For photographers, the process is much simpler. You only need a gorilla trekking permit and must follow the trekking rules and guidelines. There is no extra fee for photography. To get better images, use a low angle with a wide-angle lens to make subjects appear larger. Adjust exposure and contrast, and focus on capturing the natural beauty and behavior of the gorillas.
The best time for photography and filming in Mgahinga is during the dry season, from June to September and December to February, when the weather is clear and trails are easy to navigate.
Planning ahead is very important. Gorilla permits should be booked at least three months in advance to avoid disappointment. For a smooth experience, it is advisable to work with local tour operators or fixers who can assist with permits, logistics, and equipment clearance.
