Gorilla Habituation Experience in Bwindi Uganda

Gorilla Habituation Experience in Bwindi Uganda

Gorilla habituation is the process of helping mountain gorillas get used to human presence without changing their natural behavior.

This activity can only be done in the Rushaga sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, located in southwestern Uganda. The Uganda Wildlife Authority introduced gorilla habituation in January 2014.

Currently, there are only two gorilla families available for this activity — Bikingi and Bushaho.

The day begins early at 7 a.m. with a briefing at the park headquarters. After the briefing, tourists are divided into small groups of four, with each group assigned to one gorilla family. They are then guided by experienced rangers into the forest to look for the gorillas. The trek usually takes between 30 minutes and 6 hours, depending on the location of the gorillas. Once found, tourists can spend up to 4 hours with them.

Gorilla habituation takes place daily and can continue for about three years or less, depending on how fast the gorillas become comfortable with human presence. It is mainly carried out by researchers, trackers, and a few tourists. The process involves closely observing and imitating gorilla behavior until the animals are fully used to people.

Gorilla habituation is more demanding than normal gorilla trekking because it requires more time, energy, and money. A gorilla habituation permit is also more expensive. It costs USD 1,500 for foreign non-residents, USD 1,000 for foreign residents, and UGX 750,000 for East African citizens.

Permits can be bought directly from the Uganda Wildlife Authority or through a trusted tour operator.

There is an age restriction for this activity — children below 15 years are not allowed to take part in gorilla habituation.

The best time for gorilla habituation is during the dry seasons, from June to August and December to February. During these months, the trails are drier and easier to walk through because there is less rain.

Several accommodation options are available in Bwindi for visitors taking part in gorilla habituation. These include Rushaga Gorilla Camp, Rushaga Gorilla Safari Lodge, Chameleon Safari Lodge, Nshongi Camp, and Bwindi Jungle Lodge, among others.

Gorilla habituation is more than just an activity. It is a special experience that allows tourists to spend more time with the gorillas and learn deeply about their behavior.
